1. What’s in Meggan’s Kitchen: Joie Strawberry Huller

Joie Strawberry Huller

The Joie Strawberry Huller sports a simple design and makes cooking with everyone’s favorite summertime berry quick and easy.

Meggan has had hers for nearly 9 years, so you know it’s made to stand the test of time. “My kids eat a lot of berries, and it was fun to scoop out the stems while minimizing waste of the strawberries. Sometimes if you cut the green tops off, you lose more strawberry than necessary in the process. The huller is easy and FUN to use. It’s a super-specific utensil but it’s worth the space it takes up in my drawer (which isn’t much at all). I also use it to remove spots and blemishes from other soft fruits, and it works great to core apples and pears, too.”

The handle is made from BPA-free materials and is comfortable to hold, even when Meggan’s using it for hours. Plus, as an added bonus, it’s dishwasher-safe!

The Specs:

  • Materials: Food grade stainless steel
  • Cleaning: Dishwasher-safe
  • Dimensions: 4.5 by 0.75 by 0.15 inches

What I Like:

  • Inexpensive
  • Simple to use
  • Doesn’t take up a lot of drawer space

  • Reviewers claim the scoop is too large
  • Other people found the stainless steel is dull

Other Strawberry Hullers to Consider

Qyestad Strawberry Huller and Strawberry Slicer Set

Want an inexpensive solution for de-stemming strawberries and slicing them with ease? This combo pack includes a strawberry hulling tool and slicer that turns a whole strawberry into evenly sliced pieces. The strawberry slicer is made with durable plastic, while the huller features a combination of durable plastic and a stainless steel blade. However, while it seems like both tools are simple to use and durable, the lack of reviews ranks it just out of reach of our top picks. The Qyestad Strawberry Huller and Strawberry Slicer Set is available at Amazon for $6.68

Tovolo Strawberry Huller

There’s nothing better than a kitchen gadget that’s basic and works wonders at the same time. The Tovolo Strawberry Huller comes without all the bells and whistles of other strawberry hullers and simply removes the stem without wasting any of the fruit. The huller is made of stainless steel and has a comfortable thumb grip for those long afternoons baking Meggan’s beloved Strawberry Crisp. The Tovolo Strawberry Huller is available at Kohl’s for $7.64

Strawberry Huller Stem Remover

The Strawberry Huller Stem Remover makes removing the stems safe and uncomplicated. The ABS plastic ergonomic handle design is said to be more comfortable than other options on the market, plus you don’t have to worry about cutting your hand on a sharp blade. The tweezer part is made of food grade stainless steel, making it safe to use on all of your fruits and vegetables. While the reviews for this product are good, they are also minimal, which bumped this product out of our top picks. The Strawberry Huller Stem Remover is $7.99 at Amazon

Why You Can Trust Us

Hi! I’m Madison, a lifestyle journalist, and I’ve done my fair share of testing products — from gym equipment and beauty tools to kitchen gadgets, I know what it takes to find a great product. Growing up, my grandma had wild rhubarb that grew in a fence behind her house, so strawberry rhubarb anything was a summer must. While she used a paring knife to de-stem her strawberries, I know if she was still here today, she would be all about the modern-day strawberry huller.

For this list, I worked with Meggan, a classically trained chef who is the mastermind behind Culinary Hill, to find the very best strawberry hullers. We looked at everything from Amazon reviews to top picks from widely recognized publications and beyond. Starting with what she has in her own kitchen, we then weighed the features, price point, and reviews to come up with our list.

Everything to Know Before Buying a Strawberry Huller

What to Consider Before Buying a Strawberry Huller

While we are very aware that strawberry hullers are a niche product, a good strawberry huller can make the process of de-stemming and cutting strawberries so much easier. Here are some factors you should consider prior to buying one:

Ease of Cleaning: Most of our top picks are dishwasher-safe, but you can, of course, hand-wash them if you don’t own a dishwasher or prefer getting the job done yourself. Regardless, you should take this into account before you add one to your cart.

Price Point: Since strawberry hullers are a relatively specific product (and likely won’t be used as much when strawberries aren’t in season), you don’t want to spend too much dough. All of our recommendations are below $20, but we made sure to include options for all different budgets.

Design: There are a few different designs we found when researching the best strawberry hullers. Each one has its own pros and cons, but consider what you would best prefer, whether it be a spring-and-claw design or a classic blade.

What Are Hulled Strawberries?

To put it simply, hulling a strawberry is the process of removing the leafy green cap, also known as the calyx. While you can remove the stem with a knife, a good strawberry huller will remove the topper without taking a large portion of the fruit itself. Hulling is done before consuming or cooking with the berry.

How you remove the strawberry topper will depend on the tool you use. But for the most part, you use the tool to scoop the stem area off the top of the strawberry. After that, you can chop, slice, or skewer the strawberries without hesitation.

How Do You Clean Strawberries?

There are several different ways to clean strawberries. Some people claim that cleaning strawberries is as simple as rinsing them with ice cold tap water for 10 to 20 seconds, while others swear by soaking them in hot water for a few minutes before putting them in a salad spinner to dry off.

One of the most effective ways we’ve seen is to combine a few cups of cold water with a cup of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar in a large bowl. Once you have the mixture in the bowl, you’ll want to submerge the strawberries for 20 minutes before rinsing them off with cold water. If you don’t have any vinegar on hand, you could also use baking soda. To do so, add one teaspoon of baking soda to a few cups of water and soak the berries the same way you did with the vinegar. Rinse them off, and they’ll be as good to go.
